Our weekend began with actual bona fide sunshine on Friday afternoon,
so
naturally the puppies coerced us into taking them outside and letting
them run around in a fenced off area called the "ex-pen." If you are
not
an enthusiast of the dog world, please note that this is shorthand for
"exercise pen" and should not be confused with some combination of
"ex-con" and "state pen" or any other unfortunate literary
transfigurations.
So, first let's have a look-see at "roo-fawn-pinned," wherein the littlest one is beating the heck out of the second-biggest one. As the smallest and youngest child in my personal litter of two, circa 1970-1987 (at which point I was adopted out to a university), and constant sufferer of abuse and torment at the hands of my littermate Mike, I would just like to say Right On Roo! Kick some buttocks on behalf of all of the smallest and weakest kids everywhere! I regret to say two things: 1) I didn't take many photos outside because I was busy taking movie clips and 2) I have not prepared the movie clips for public consumption yet, so I can't offer to send them to you. But I will do that, because they are cute as heck. So imagine how cute those puppies were in the great sunny outdoors (sun quickly gave in to more rain, rain, rain, rain, rain) and then fast-forward your mind to the aftermath, wherein muddy puppies were required to take baths. I present to you "beebee-tiny-wet-dog." This baby bullmastiff is thinking with all his might that when he grows up he is going to take a large bite out of the behind of the humans who subjected him to this torture, especially the one taking the humiliating photograph. (In truth, as Beebee will learn, bullmastiffs are too nice to bite people.) Moving on to drier moments, please see "fawn-emmy-jr" wherein the Fawn girl is looking like her mumsy and having a blast with a toy while she's at it. And find yourself caught up in all the energy and excitement of "beegee-hop" where our dramatic photographic composition shows Beegee charging into the world of play and gives you just a paw's peek at her target. I can assure you this was a deliberate composition and we worked for hours to pose the puppies just so. Finally, if you don't mind, take a look at "roo-beebee-tomato-fight" and see how sometimes even though there are lots of toys, puppies can't resist being grabby and selfish. Obviously these puppies have not yet had puppy kindergarten, where puppies learn to share (and count to 10 and learn the alphabet and paste). All in good time, my friends.

Today in the DAILY PUPPY FIX, a special bonus photograph featuring
Henry, the puppies' "uncle"! Last night during Puppy Play Time, Henry
came out for some fun and found that Puppies Are Pesky and anytime you,
if you are an adult bullmastiff, want a drink of water, all four
puppies
will come up to the water bucket and shove their heads in so you cannot
drink. They all seem to be saying, "What a great idea, Uncle Henry! We
are thirsty too!!" But since you are so goodnatured, you being the
adult
bullmastiff named Henry, you will yield to them and end up thirsty all
night. Please see "henry-kids-drink." He played with them very sweetly
and let them lick his muzzle and all that. He loves these puppies.
There
is a theory on Puppy Hill that Henry is especially patient with this
litter because he learned from the last one that puppies all leave when
they turn eight weeks old, but ...
Well, to say more would get into tomorrow's DAILY PUPPY FIX news flash, so I will stop right there and keep you in suspense for a day. In the meantime, might I ask your indulgence in viewing the photo "roo-3d"? Here Miss Tinypants was sitting on the bottom shelf of a glass end table and just as I moved to photograph her royal cuteness, she saw the camera and came lurching at me. What a jokester, but nonetheless the resulting photo is, if we may say so ourselves, kind of fun. Back to the Henry theme (but no news leaks, you greedy readers!): Please check out the way these puppies, particularly the brindle ones, torment Henry when he's in his crate, which everybody knows is the safest spot for an adult bullmastiff when puppies are on the loose. See "brindles-henry-crate," sponsored by Touch of Glass (a necessary household product when you have both bullmastiffs and glass tables). Well, now, if Miss Fawn isn't just the cutest thing alive in "fawn-happygolucky," I don't know who is. (Maybe Roo?) Anyway, please partake of this petite peppy puppy as she prances perkily through the parlor.

Today on the DAILY PUPPY FIX: Special guests! Yes, it's true, our house
was blessed last evening by a visit from none other than the Pharr
family of Atlanta, also known as owners of the fabulous Noah, the
father
of your favorite puppies. The Pharrs had traveled north for some crazy
bullmastiff dog show in New York State, and came through our neck of
the
woods to check out the litter on their way home. It was absolutely an
honor to meet them and also to meet Noah, aka Big Daddy, and Simon, aka
Noah's dad, the puppies' grandfather. Please see "simon-noah-61003."
These boys were perfect gentlemen and adorable in every way. If you are
not good at bullmastiff math (brindle + fawn = any/all colors; red +
fawn = fawn/red only) you may need me to clarify that Grandpa Simon is
the beautiful red stud on the left, and Big Daddy Noah is the handsome
brindle boy on the right.
Readers, yesterday I promised you some exciting news. It involved Uncle Henry's delusions about puppies leaving when they are 8 weeks old. Well, this year we have a special surprise for Henry: We will have a crowded house for a couple of weeks after the eight-week mark, and Little Roo is going to be Henry's baby sister forever! That's right, after much hemming and hawing and begging and pleading, Breeder Chris Rasmussen has decided she is keeping Roo as her own puppy. It was her determination that Roo will be the right dog for her kennel (ExLibris Bullmastiffs Inc., "Bullmastiffs by the book") and I assure you that despite my biases and preferences, I made no efforts to influence her decision on this matter. Nonetheless I am tickled pink. In the meantime, Beebee and Beegee will be with us for a little while after their 8-week birthdays because of scheduling issues with their new families. Little Fawn's future is a bit uncertain at this point, as her potential owners deliberate over whether she will go home with them and when, or whether another lucky family will get to lay claim to her. Anything is possible and we are trying to stay braced for that little pumpkin to leave our patch! I promise to keep you posted, readers! What this means, if I may just explain one more thing before we get into the business of actual puppy photos, is that the DAILY PUPPY FIX could feasibly continue forever, well into certain puppies' full-grown doghood. This is not likely, though, since the editrix is tired, if you can believe that. But I feel certain some sort of arrangement could be made to keep you, my devoted followers, knee-deep in puppy pictures for a while after next Tuesday's 8-week-old birthday. Hold it, wait, another thing before I introduce the photographs: I am extremely pleased and excited to announce that despite hints printed a while back in this very publication that his name should be Buckley, the family adopting Beebee is leaning toward HENRY as a name for their little boy. We can't think of a greater honor for the Big Henry who shares our home and our lives, and we also think it's a rocking name for a bullmastiff. So hats off to you, Beebee's future family! I will make other announcements about names when things are solidified a little more, including any corrections on Beebee's future name, should his family decide on something else. They absolutely have that right, mind you! But please stop pressuring them to name him Buckley. Onto the business at hand! I offer a photo apiece of each puppy, really needing no explanation. Can you imagine your editrix/ authoress passing up an opportunity to babble on? Well, pinch yourself and learn that you're not dreaming. Please enjoy the remaining four attached photos. Readers, an advisory. I am traveling tomorrow and Friday for the occasion of a funeral and while I will make every attempt to get things to you that you need and deserve, you may experience an unprecedented DAILY PUPPY FIX interruption. But it's also possible that you may experience a guest editrix! Maybe I will return Monday to find that you don't even love me anymore, and you love the guest editrix instead. Well, pooey on all of you if that happens.

Since our intrepid Puppy Fix editor is out of town and unable to fulfill her duties, she has asked me to step in. I agreed to do my best. Please forgive the brevity. Fearing I'd never match Kristina's wit and prose, I won't try. Instead, I'll just supply you with photos and short descriptions.
First, please see "beebee-sweetface," in which the lone boy of the litter puts on one of his most appealing expressions. Little "Henry," much like his namesake, is about as adorable as they come! Next, have a gander at "fawn-beebee-lounge." Here you'll see two puppies in their most favorite spots in the whelping box. That's right, Beebee/Henry has made himself quite at home in the litter box. Not to worry! I have it on good authority that the box is kept very clean. To nearly peer into the sweet soul of Beegee, take a look at "beegee-close-up." Beegee, you can see, is frequently deep in thought. Finally, see the aftermath of too much living room frolic (that's right, MORE rain kept play activities indoors!) in "roo-tuckered." The little red girl, in typical puppy fashion, completely ran her batteries down. Fear not, though! She had recharged them by 11 pm and was ready to go all over again, much to the tired despair of yours truly. Fat chance!

In "fawn-beebee-bed," see the little ones taking their puppy-sized stress out on Henry's bed. Luckily, their puppy-sized teeth did no damage. Hold onto your hearts, you're about to lose them to "hen-beegee," whereby we see Henry taking some time to give little BeeGee some advice. Maybe that beds taste bad, and she was wise not to join in on the chewing. Henry really enjoyed the puppies last night, and inserted himself into their activities wherever possible. In "fawn-zoom," notice Henry's big front paws above and below little Fawn as she speeds past (see her ears for an indication of her speed -- she was in a hurry!). Roo, not to be outdone by her busy littermates, can be found in action herself in "roo-run." She didn't tell me where she was going, but she certainly had somewhere to be, you can bet on that. Finally, notice how the electric energy in the air even got mommy Emmy in on the fun. In "hen-em-play," we can see that Emmy, forfeiting her position on the couch, was ready to take Henry down.
